Family, guests escape nighttime fire...

ROCK ISLAND -- Minutes separated people staying in Lisa and Bob Somers' house between life and death.

A fire early this morning left the couple, their five children and some guests without a home. Mrs. Somers was known to take in anyone that needed a place to stay, said her longtime friend, Lea Turner of Rock Island. 'Lisa's home was everybody's home.'

Space and kerosene heaters are the leading cause of home fires in December, January and February, according to the National Fire Protection Association, and second only to cooking fires as the leading cause of home fires year-round.
