Former Death Row Inmate Released From Prison...
Submitted by admin on Thursday, July 3, 2008 - 01:45

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Former death row inmate Paul House is finally free from prison. At 9:51 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, House was released on bond after spending nearly 23, years on Tennessee's death row. He came out with a Pepsi and candy bar in hand.

It was an emotional release at Riverbend prison Wednesday morning. Paul House smiled from ear to ear as he was greeted by his mother and attorney.

"It was discouraging. Lots of times it was discouraging but I just couldn't give up," his mother said Wednesday morning.

Paul House said, "I feel pretty good," when he was released.

His mother was also excited. "I said,'You're going home.' And he said, 'Oh boy I can't wait,'" his mother Joyce told NewsChannel 5.

House was convicted in the 1985 slaying of Carolyn Muncey in Union County, but a federal judge ordered prosecutors to retry or free House after the U.S. Supreme Court questioned his conviction.

House will be free from the handcuffs and shackles, but required to be under house arrest at his mother's house until his new trial, but according to House, that's not a bad deal.

"I want to get out of here and go to Crossville, let Mom take care of me. She's pretty good at it," House said in an interview earlier this year with NewsChannel 5.

House's mother, Joyce House, said Tuesday an anonymous donor provided $10,000 to get her son out of prison. His bond had recently been reduced to $100,000 and only ten percent had to be posted for release. Joyce, had planned to use her Crossville home to post a property bond to ensure her son's release.

Special Judge John Kerry Blackwood said he did not appear to be a flight risk because of his multiple sclerosis. The condition makes it impossible for him to walk and restricts him to a wheel chair.

Under conditions of the bond, House will be monitored 24 hours a day and will have to register as a sex offender, and is only allowed to leave home for medical appointments and court appearances. He will face re-trial in October.

Earlier this year, in April, Paul House talked to NewsChannel 5. The former death row inmate said he knows he'll face critics as he has many times before.

"I really don't care about them people. I've been in prison for years -- 22 or 23 years -- and I really don't care what they think about me. Like I say, I want to get out, go home, hug Mom, and have her pass the steak. Mom is a very good cook," said House.

Chattanooga Federal Judge, Harry Mattice Jr. believed House was not given a fair trial when others did not.

"He's a good man, a damn good man," he said referring to Judge Mattice. "Nobody paid any attention to what I had to say," he continued.

House has maintained his innocence from the beginning in 1986 saying he did not murder 29 year old Carolyn Muncey. House's court appointed attorney uncovered evidence through DNA testing that the semen on the victim's body and clothing came from her husband.

"The central forensic proof connecting House to the crime -- the blood and the semen -- has been called into question, and House has put forward substantial evidence pointing to a different suspect."
